This seminar will consider certain historical and contemporary issues involving the American professoriate, emphasizing the following topics:

• Historical Perspectives


• Academic Employment


• Academic Culture


• Teaching and Research


• Academic Rewards


• Faculty Development

Students will have an opportunity to work with national faculty data collected in 1989 and 1995. Students will be expected to select a research topic, review the literature, utilize existing data or new data, and prepare a paper. Students could work independently or in teams. Students will be encouraged to play a leadership role during coverage of topics that interest them.

Grade:

• 50% final paper


• 25% class participation


• 25% class presentation(s)
