The purpose of the course is to engage a small number of students in helping to create a new Center at UCLA. The mission of the “Center for Strategic Change” is to help institutions of higher education from countries around the world to develop the capacity to interpret their environments and adapt. More broadly, the Center’s aim is to develop theory to guide such change, and to provide tools to enable administrative and academic leaders to effect lasting and productive change.

The class will meet for 10 weeks. Seven meetings will be devoted to reporting on selected readings and discussing issues about change with invited policy leaders and experts on higher education.

The schedule is as follows (subject to change based on guests’ availability):

1. (April 3) Introduction and class design and expectations:

2. (April 10) The Research University

3. (April 17) The System of Universities

4. (April 24) The University Transition Project

5. (May 1) Higher Education Stakeholders
